Program Overview
Discovery Channel CME has assembled a panel of medical experts to advise physicians on the adoption of National Quality Forum (NQF) Endorsed Safe Practices for Better Healthcare. This program reviews the need for Safe Practices to mitigate harm caused by errors in healthcare organizations, highlights recent medical errors caused by system failures, and offers guidance for implementation of Safe Practices. This CME focuses on Safe Practices to engage leadership, deploy programs for disclosure of adverse medical events and care of our frontline caregivers, medication management and pharmacist leadership. In addition to the Discovery documentary/video clips, four of the National Quality Forum Safe Practices and two journal articles should be reviewed for this program.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe baseline knowledge of patient safety principles and how some quality organizations have managed to implement programs that are "chasing zero" medical errors.
- Review National Quality Forum Safe Practice 1: Culture of Safety Leadership Structure and Systems and reasons for why hospitals need to implement such programs.
- Describe how National Quality Forum Safe Practice 7: Disclosure has been implemented in quality organizations and the reasons for its necessity.
- Review Safe Practice 8: Care of the Caregiver and specifications for implementation.
- Explain the importance of establishing Safe Practice 18: Pharmacist Leadership Structures and Systems.
