Minimally Invasive Surgery for Lung Cancer
In this special patient education program, several patients will be profiled as they prepare to undergo video assisted thoracic surgery. The program will feature what patients can expect during the surgery and during the post operative recovery period. Some of the nation's leading thoracic surgeons will be interviewed, including Traves Crabtree, MD Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri; Daniel L. Miller, MD, Chief General Thoracic Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine; and Scott J. Swanson, MD, Director, Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery, Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is a major advancement in the treatment of many medical conditions, including non-small cell lung cancer. VATS is a minimally invasive surgical method that allows thoracic surgeons (physicians who perform surgery in the chest cavity) to perform a procedure on a patient through small openings. Compared with open surgery, VATS procedures can cause less physical injury to a patient's body and faster recovery time, while allowing the surgeon to perform a highly effective procedure.
