Steven D. Passik, Ph.D., is associate professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and associate attending psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavorial Sciences at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York, New York. He's also a clinical psychologist at Rockefeller University Hospital, the Center for Clinical and Translational Science in New York, New York.
Dr. Passik received his masters in general psychology and his doctorate in clinical psychology from New School for Social Research in New York, New York. During his doctorate training, Dr. Passik completed several externships and internships in psychology including an internship at the Payne Whitney Clinic of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell in New York, New York. Following his externships and internships, he became the chief fellow in psychiatry at MSKCC.
Dr. Passik is on the board of directors and is the founding member of the International Association of Pain and Chemical Dependency. He is also a member of several professional memberships including, American Pain Society, American Psychology Association's division of psychoanalysis and division of substance abuse, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Psychiatric Oncology/AIDS, International Association for the Study of Pain, International Psycho-Oncology Society, Midwest Pain Society, and New York State Cancer Pain Initiative.
Dr. Passik's research interests include symptom management assessment interventions for cancer patients, in which he carried out numerous trials on depression, nausea, fatigue, and insomnia and has several funded studies including a National Institutes for Health (NIH) Research Project Grant (R01) in this area. Dr. Passik's other research interest includes issues on the "interface" of pain and substance abuse, in which he conducted multiple studies on aberrant drug related behaviors in pain management and will be submitting an NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant (R21) on genetic aspects of poor outcomes on opioids with Drs. Pasternak, Pan (MSKCC) and Kirsh (University of Kentucky).
Dr. Passik is active on many publications and is on the editorial board of Terminal Oncology and on the editorial advisory board of Journal of Supportive Oncology. He has also contributed to numerous peer reviewed articles and has published articles in Pain Medicine and Journal of Opioid Management. Dr. Passik is also co-author of the first Pain and Chemical Dependency textbook.
