John Leahy, M.D., is Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Burlington. He is director of the Vermont Regional Diabetes Center and attending physician at the Medicine Health Care Service, both at Fletcher Allen Health Care/University of Vermont. Dr Leahy also serves as director of the Endocrine Fellowship Program at the University. He is board certified in internal medicine and in endocrinology and metabolism.
Dr Leahy's research interests have included pancreatic b-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance in diabetes, and he is currently the principal investigator in studies examining the mechanisms of b-cell compensation. He has served as a reviewer for the Metabolism and CADO Study Sections of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Leahy has authored and coauthored many book chapters and articles, the latter of which have appeared in such peer-reviewed journals as Diabetes, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, and The New England Journal of Medicine. In addition, he coedited 2 books (Medical Management of Diabetes Mellitus and Insulin Therapy), currently is coeditor of Year Book of Endocrinology, and was editor-in-chief of Insulin Therapy and Your Practice: Strategies for Improving Patient Outcomes, published by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
Dr Leahy is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the ADA, the American Society of Clinical Investigation, The Endocrine Society, and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
