Insulin Initiation: Targeting Type 2 Diabetes
Available for credit through September 23, 2009
Accreditation
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Public Health and Discovery Health Channel, in partnership with ProCom International. The University of Virginia School of Medicine and Public Health is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The University of Virginia School of Medicine and Public Health designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Program Overview
Type 2 diabetes has become an epidemic in the United States. Despite effective medications and clinical guidelines, glycemic control continues to be inadequate. For many patients, the early initiation of insulin may them achieve their glycemic targets. Despite current recommendations advocating insulin therapy in type 2 diabetes, there are both patient and physician barriers to instituting an insulin regimen.
Discovery Health has assembled a panel of experts to review the recent scientific evidence relating to the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes, the benefits of early insulin therapy, and the current recommendations for insulin initiation in type 2 diabetes.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the epidemiology of type 2 diabetes.
- Explain the pathophysiology and natural history of type 2 diabetes as it relates to beta-cell dysfunction and progressive insulin deficiency.
- Review data supporting the importance of aggressive glycemic control in type 2 diabetes.
- Describe current recommendations on the use of insulin in reaching glycemic targets for patients with type 2 diabetes.
- Identify the benefits of early insulin therapy and the role of basal insulin therapy in type 2 diabetes.
- Design treatment strategies for patients with type 2 diabetes who may benefit from initiation of insulin therapy to improve glycemic control.
- Discuss barriers and misconceptions on insulin therapy and develop strategies to combat them.
