This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Public Health and Discovery Channel CME. Program Overview
Discovery Channel CME has assembled a panel of leading medical experts to advise physicians on the role of insulin to improve glucose control among patients with Type 2 diabetes. The program reviews recent trends in the epidemiology of Type 2 diabetes, as well as recent data to support the importance of aggressive glycemic control in Type 2 diabetes. The panel discussion will also include current strategies for the use of different types of insulin, including basal, prandial and concentrated insulin in reaching glycemic targets.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss recent trends in the epidemiology of Type 2 diabetes, with a particular focus on the impact of minorities and the elderly.
  • Explain the pathophysiology of Type 2 diabetes.
  • Discuss data supporting the importance of aggressive glycemic control in Type 2 diabetes.
  • Describe kinetics of insulin replacement in patients with Type 2 diabetes.
  • Describe current strategies for the use of different types of insulin, including basal, prandial, and concentrated insulin in reaching glycemic targets.
  • Discuss barriers and misconceptions about insulin therapy as well as strategies to combat them, including improved communication with patients.

Target Audience
Primary Care Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and other healthcare professionals with clinical responsibilities and interests in the healthcare of patients with diabetes.
