Program Overview
Cervical cancer is one of the most common female cancers worldwide. Screening programs in the United States have markedly reduced the number of cervical cancer cases, but nearly 10,000 American women are still diagnosed with a preventable cancer every year. New research has shown that more than 99% of cervical cancer is caused by a common virus, the human papillomavirus (HPV). Many women are unaware of HPV and it's role in cervical cancer. Testing for HPV in addition to the Pap smear will make screening easier and more effective for all women. A vaccine for HPV has also been developed that could drastically change the approach to detecting cervical cancer. Discovery Health CME brings together a group of experts to discuss HOV testing, new screening strategies, and the HPV vaccine.
