Critical Issues In Managing Pain With Opioid Therapy

Program Overview
Chronic non-cancer pain is a common and complex clinical problem. This program will review the evidence that demonstrates the prevalence of chronic pain and its debilitating, costly effects when inadequately treated. Opioid therapy may be an integral part of a patient's treatment plan if the proper precautions and direction are taken prior to its induction. However, there are serious concerns by clinicians related to the development of addiction and other aberrant drug-related behaviors in patients for whom opioid therapy may be necessary. This program is designed to discuss the implementation of a pain management plan that utilizes risk assessment tools and monitoring strategies and provides considerations for the use of abuse-deterrent formulations of opioid therapy.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the causes and consequences of inadequately treated pain
  • Use a best-practice approach to a pain management plan for your patients based on clinical guidelines and available pain management tools
  • Describe treatment modalities and new pharmacologic therapies that offer clinicians options to reduce the risk of opioid abuse, misuse, and diversion

Target Audience

This educational activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of healthcare providers involved in the care of patients with pain.
