Program Overview
Discovery Health has assembled a group of key opinion leaders to explore the role of folic acid in preconception care among women. The program addresses the current recommendations for folic acid intake before and during pregnancy and discusses the role of folic acid in preventing birth defects. In addition, it reviews suggestions to improve folic acid intake and preconception care among patients.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology of neural tube defects and discuss what is known about folic acid intake among women in the U.S.
- Explain the biologic basis of the role of folic acid in preventing birth defects.
- List sources of folate and folic acid, including natural sources and supplements.
- List current recommendations for folic acid intake before and during pregnancy.
- Discuss methods for raising patients' awareness of the value of preconception care, knowledge of folic acid needs and compliance with recommended levels of intake.
