Type 2 Diabetes: New Treatment Strategies

The University of Wisconsin Medical School is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Program Overview
Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States today. Traditional strategies for the management of type 2 diabetes do not address the underlying mechanisms responsible for maintaining optimal glycemic control and, consequently, lead to disease progression and the development of cardiovascular disease and other complications. Several recent studies have shown that intervention at the stage of impaired glucose tolerance, which is early relative to the contemporary clinical practice of treating established diabetes, can delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. This program will help physicians reevaluate current treatment strategies to recognize the importance of identifying and treating high-risk individuals before the disease progresses.

This program is funded through an educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
  • Recognize the importance of implementing more aggressive screening and lifestyle modification approaches for type 2 diabetes in clinical practice.
  • Explain that effective treatment plans for type 2 diabetes must go beyond glycemic control to address the coexisting manifestations of insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction.
  • Demonstrate that early treatment with pharmacologic agents such as thiazolidinediones (TZDs) modify insulin resistance and may alter the natural history of type 2 diabetes.
  • Describe the mechanism of action of TZDs and demonstrate how, when used in combination with other antidiabetic medications, these agents can manage the coexisting cardiovascular complications of the disease.
  • Discuss the consensus recommendations from the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association for effective utilization of TZDs in clinical practice.
  • Utilize observational and laboratory findings to diagnose metabolic syndrome.
Target Audience
This program has been developed for physicians who diagnose, manage, and treat patients with type 2 diabetes.

This program is intended solely for the education of physicians and other healthcare professionals. Any consumers who view this program should consult their physicians regarding how to best manage type 2 diabetes.

Term of Approval
The CME test is valid through June 6, 2006. No credit will be issued after this date.
