Program Overview
For some Type 2 diabetic patients who are not maintaining lifestyle changes and have morbid obesity or obesity related complications, bariatric surgery is an important consideration. This CME program focuses on the pathophysiology of obesity-related diabetes and explores effective treatment options. Our medical experts will review the importance of weight loss and lifestyle changes to help prevent complications and explore the potential benefits of bariatric surgery for selected, obese diabetic patients.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the link between obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
  • Identify the adverse and physical and psychological affects of these two conditions.
  • Review the research indicating that, for selected patients, bariatric surgery brings significant improvement in or complete resolution of Type 2 diabetes.
  • Describe which patients are appropriate candidates for bariatric surgery.
  • Differentiate among the types of bariatric surgery, including gastric banding and bypass.

Target Audience
Primary Care Physicians, Bariatric Surgeons, Endocrinologists, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and other health care professionals.
