John G. Tierney, M.D., received his bachelor of science in psychology from the United States Air Force Academy, where he graduated with honors. He earned a master's in psychology at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, and received his M.D. at the University of Texas Health Science Center Medical School in San Antonio. He completed his residency in psychiatry at the same institution and served his senior year as chief resident. Dr. Tierney went on to complete additional fellowship training in consultation-liaison psychiatry at the Ochsner Institute in New Orleans. He spent several years on the faculty of Emory University Medical School in Atlanta before returning to his Texas roots.
Board certified in psychiatry with added certification in geriatrics, Dr. Tierney has practiced psychiatry since his internship in 1989. He volunteers as a clinical associate professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center Medical School in San Antonio. He has co-authored chapters and articles on depression and psychiatric issues of the medically ill, and Dr. Tierney conducts lectures nationally and internationally on psychiatric treatment issues.
Dr. Tierney has a solo private practice of general adult and geriatric psychiatry, and participates as an investigator in clinical research protocols. Among his honors, he is especially proud to be awarded "Master Clinician Award" from the Neuroscience Education Institute, to re-certify in geriatric psychiatry in 2006, and to be listed annually among the "Texas Super DNovors" by Texas Monthly Magazine (2004-Present).
