Program Overview
Depression is a common medical condition in the U.S. affecting 12 million people each year. The diagnosis of depression is difficult and frequently missed. Patients often present with physical symptoms, rather than traditional emotional symptoms of depression. Many of these physical symptoms are body aches and pains, and there is a reciprocal role between depression and painful symptoms. Research has shown the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine play a pivotal role in development of depression and associated pain. Medications targeting these two important neuromodulators have proven to be effective in the broad treatment of emotional and physical symptoms of depression. Discovery Health CME brings together a group of experts to discuss physical symptoms of depression, biochemical causes for these symptoms and appropriate treatment options for patients with depression and pain.
