Program Overview
Discovery Channel CME has assembled a panel of medical experts to advise physicians on the treatment of chronic pain among patients. This program reviews the pathophysiology of pain, highlights recent research on chronic pain therapy, and offers guidance on which medications, especially the use of antidepressants and anticonvulsants, may be appropriate. The discussion will also include effective communication strategies to improve management of chronic pain patients.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- List the elements involved in a full assessment of chronic pain.
- Define chronic pain and explain its pathophysiology
- Describe what is known about the mechanisms of action of the different classes of medications used to treat chronic pain.
- Describe recent research regarding the role of medications including antidepressants and anticonvulsants in treating chronic pain.
- List ways to improve knowledge regarding effective physician-patient communication techniques in the treatment of chronic pain
Target Audience
Internal Medicine Physicians, Family Medicine Physicians, Rheumatologists, Physiatrists, Neurologists, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants involved in the care of patients with chronic pain.
