Program Overview
Childhood Obesity is growing at an alarming rate, with overweight children on track for a lifetime of problems including heart disease, diabetes and depression. Doctors are frequently uncomfortable broaching weight issues, yet families view physicians as a trusted source of advice.
Discovery Health has assembled a panel of experts to discuss recent data on childhood obesity, early intervention benefits and optimal ways to overcome barriers.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe the new classifications for at-risk, overweight and obese children, and explain the recommended screening procedures and appropriate medical tests.
- Discuss health problems related to overweight children and indicate when weight maintenance or weight loss is appropriate.
- Explain the recommendations for prevention, including physical activity and dietary guidance for children.
- Describe effective counseling techniques, taking into consideration cultural values, potential bias and stigma.
- Review behavior modification strategies, emphasizing the critical nature of family involvement.
Target Audience
Pediatricians, Family Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners and other licensed health professionals who care for children.
