Program Overview
Combating childhood obesity is a top priority for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 9 million children in the United States are overweight. As the rate of overweight children continues to rise, government agencies are both researching the causes and creating programs to help fight this growing epidemic. Pediatric providers can play a major role in preventing and treating childhood obesity. Professional organizations and government officials are asking for the help of clinicians to solve this problem. The purpose of this program is to provide clinicians, especially pediatric providers, with the information they need to assess, diagnose, and treat overweight children.

Learning Objectives
1. Identify the epidemiology for overweight children
2. Calculate BMI for children
3. Describe the difference between BMI for adults and BMI for children (BMI-for-age)
4. Define the difference between "at risk for overweight" and "overweight" for children in terms of BMI-for-age
5. Discuss the health problems that can be related to overweight in children
6. Explain the recommended screening procedure for overweight children
7. Recognize when weight loss vs. weight maintenance is appropriate
8. Describe the recommendations for physical activity in children (frequency, duration, level)
9. Identify the appropriate medical tests that should be performed for "at risk" and "overweight" children with risk factors
10. Describe behavioral modification strategies, including parenting skills and motivation to change lifestyle

Target Audience
This program has been developed for pediatricians, primary care physicians, pediatric nurse practitioners and pediatric nurses who assess, diagnose, and treat overweight children.
