Dr. McCall is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Virginia School (UVA) of Medicine. He also heads the Department of Clinical Diabetes services at the UVA Health System. In addition, Dr. McCall serves as Medical Director at the Virginia Center for Diabetes Professional Education and the Diabetes Education and Management Program of the UVA Health System. Prior to joining UVA, Dr. McCall was Professor of Medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences University, where he served as Director of Diabetes Research, Director of the lipid clinic, and the Co-Director of the High Risk Diabetes clinic.
During his career, Dr. McCall has published over 100 abstracts, papers and reviews. His current clinical research addresses the use of insulin infusions to achieve tight glycemic control in patients with thrombotic stroke. He is also a co-investigator in a consortium that includes UVA, Harvard, and the University of Utah Medical Center that will characterize physiological intermediate phenotypes for type 2 diabetes patients and hypertension. In the study, renin angiotensin system and inflammatory subtypes are characterized and related to candidate gene abnormalities.
In addition to his medical degree, Dr. McCall received his Ph.D. in Neuroendocrinology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. In 2007, he was honored with an Outstanding Teaching Award by the UVA Health System.
