Cardiometabolic Risk Factors: Hitting the Targets
This program is available for credit until December 2, 2009

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Public Health and Discovery Health Channel. The University of Virginia School of Medicine and Public Health is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The University of Virginia School of Medicine and Public Health designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Program Overview
Whether you group them together or look at them individually, four major cardiometabolic risk factors are putting millions of patients at risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The risk factors are central adiposity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, and over one-third of adults in the U.S. have more than one of them - yet they are widely under-treated.
Given these startling statistics, as well as the epidemic rise of obesity, it is critical for physicians to recognize and aggressively treat these risk factors.
Discovery Health Channel has assembled a panel of experts to discuss the latest epidemiological and clinical data, as well as optimal treatment strategies in Cardiometabolic Risk Factors: Hitting the Targets.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe the metabolic risk factors associated with diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.
- Discuss the epidemiology of these risk factors, including aspects of age, gender, and ethnicity.
- Review the pathophysiology of the risk factors, including a discussion of the endocannabinoid system.
- Identify the key points for early diagnosis and aggressive management of the risk factors.
- Identify the treatment targets for each risk factor and discuss the key points for early diagnosis and aggressive management.
