This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Public Health and Discovery Channel CME. Program Overview
Discovery Channel CME has assembled a panel of medical experts to discuss common barriers to bariatric surgery referral and specific strategies to help patients achieve long-term success. The program will address the different types of bariatric surgery procedures, including gastric bypass and gastric banding, their effectiveness, as well as benefits to patients being considered for referral.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the latest data on the rates of obesity.
  • Explain barriers to referral for bariatric surgery and discuss strategies to overcome such barriers.
  • Describe the different bariatric surgery procedures, including gastric bypass and gastric banding.
  • Describe recent data regarding the effectiveness of bariatric surgery.
  • Identify approaches for long term weight loss after bariatric surgery.

Target Audience
Primary Care Physicians, Family Medicine Physicians, Internists, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and other health care professionals.
