Program Overview
Aspirin plays a significant role in primary and secondary prevention of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular death due to its action as an inhibitor of platelet function. Aspirin therapy is recommended for certain patients in guidelines by the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the American Diabetes Association. Adherence to these guidelines is considered a measure of quality by many organizations.

Despite national guidelines, aspirin therapy continues to be underused and under-prescribed. Education on the current research and clinical guidelines about aspirin therapy will serve to improve utilization of this low-cost high-benefit medication.

Discovery Health has assembled a panel of thought leaders to discuss the data associated with the effective use of aspirin, its indications, benefits and associated risks, as well as issues with misconceptions about aspirin and physician compliance with clinical guidelines for its use.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the recent data on aspirin therapy in the primary and secondary prevention of atherothrombotic disease.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits of aspirin therapy.
  • Distinguish features of variable response, noncompliance, treatment failure, and the appropriate antiplatelet therapy in such patients.
  • Describe the current clinical practice guidelines for aspirin therapy.
  • Address the misconceptions about aspirin contraindications and side effects.
  • Identify methods to improve clinician compliance with published clinical guidelines.
  • Discuss recent findings on other health benefits of aspirin, separate from cardiovascular, such as prostate disease.

Target Audience
Cardiologists, Primary Care Physicians, Endocrinologists, Neurologists, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and Pharmacists
