Dr. Gail Macik is a hematologist with a career-long interest in hemostasis. She is currently Associate Professor of Medicine and Pathology, Co-director of the Hemophilia Clinic, Co-director of the Anticoagulation Clinic, Medical Director of the Special Coagulation Laboratory, Director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program, and Co-Chair of the Medical Center Anticoagulation Workforce Committee at the University of Virginia Health System (UVA). She joined UVA in 1998 following a brief time at the George Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. Macik previously served as a faculty member at Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) for 6 years, where she developed a clinical coagulation service to complement the basic science work in coagulation being performed there. During her time at DUMC, she started the Anticoagulation Clinic and served as Medical Director of the Clinical Coagulation Laboratory, supervising a staff of 20 technicians trained in coagulation testing. While at DUMC, she earned the Eugene Stead teaching award presented by the house officers.
Her career has also included Medical Director for a start-up company developing whole blood anticoagulation technology, a position that involved working with the Federal Food and Drug Agency to license new technology. During this time she developed an expertise in whole blood, point of care, and coagulation testing and remains an intermittent consultant to the FDA regarding point of care issues.
As a hematology fellow, Dr. Macik was involved in the first clinical trials using recombinant factor VIIa (rFVIIa) for treatment of hemophilia patients with inhibitors, giving the first dose of rFVIIa administered in the United States. She performed several pharmacodynamic studies with the drug and published early studies on the possible mechanism of action of rFVIIa.
She previously served on the American Society of Hematology scientific subcommittee on hemostasis and chaired an education session at the 2001 annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology. From 1999-2001, Dr. Macik served on the FDA's Blood Products Advisory Committee, and she has been retained as a special government employee by the FDA as a consultant for hematology and hemostasis. She currently serves on the American Society of Hematology Test Material Development Committee. She has been appointed by the Governor of Virginia to the Virginia State Bleeding Disorders Committee. Areas of interest include anticoagulation management, ITP, and hemophilia care.
